In kakeibo, every expense is sorted into one of four pillars. It isn't busywork: it's what lets you see, at a glance, what kind of life your money is buying. Here are the four, with examples.
Remember the starting point of the method: income minus savings is what you can spend. That available money is split across these four pillars.
What you need to live.
What you fancy, not what you need.
What helps you grow.
What you didn't expect.
1. Survival (生活)
The essentials you'd keep even if you cut everything else: rent or mortgage, groceries, electricity and water, transport, basic health. It's the largest pillar for most people and the one with the least wiggle room. Knowing it well tells you your monthly "bare minimum."
2. Wants (欲求)
Things you enjoy but could skip: restaurants, leisure, clothes you don't need, treats, entertainment subscriptions. This isn't the "bad" pillar — enjoying yourself is part of a healthy life — but it's where impulse spending spikes. It benefits most from a pause before buying.
3. Culture (文化)
Spending that forms or enriches you: books, courses, music, cinema, museums, learning a language. Separating it from "wants" is one of kakeibo's loveliest ideas: it recognizes that investing in your mind isn't the same as a fleeting treat, even if both are optional.
4. Extra / Unexpected (予備)
What doesn't fit the other three and usually arrives unannounced: gifts, a car repair, a fine, a surprise medical bill. Having a pillar for this stops one surprise from blowing up the whole month and making you feel "kakeibo doesn't work."
How do I split the budget across the four?
There's no sacred rule, but a useful starting point for your available money is 50 / 30 / 10 / 10:
| Pillar | Guideline split |
|---|---|
| Survival | 50% |
| Wants | 30% |
| Culture | 10% |
| Extra | 10% |
Adjust it to your reality: big-city living pushes "survival" up; studying pushes "culture" up. What matters isn't the perfect percentage but deciding it in advance and reviewing it each month.
